Vantage expands its range of PE-bead alternatives

Jojoba spheres from Vantage for natural exfoliation in skin care productsVantage Specialty Ingredients has launched PFJ-S Beads, a next generation natural exfoliant for use in beauty and personal care products. This is the latest addition to Vantage’s collection of Desert Whale Jojoba natural exfoliants, which are biodegradable, sustainable alternatives to polyethylene (PE) beads.

The PE bead problem

PE beads, or plastic microbeads, provide gentle yet effective exfoliation. They have been widely used in a variety of beauty and personal care products such as cleansers, scrubs and body washes.

However, awareness and concern about their impact on the environment is growing. According to research, they are able to pass from drainage systems through the filters of a wastewater treatment plant into sewer systems, eventually flowing into rivers, lakes and oceans. As PE beads are not biodegradable, they remain in the environment as a pollutant, consumed by fish or other marine life, and are subsequently distributed along the food chain.

Taking a stance

In light of growing pollution issues caused by PE beads, campaigns against their use in beauty and personal care applications have been launched by various environmental groups. In addition, legislation in various countries around the world has recently been passed, such as the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015 in the US which will ban the sale of beauty and personal care products containing PE beads in the coming years.

An innovative, natural solution

Jojoba-plant-seedsExfoliation is an essential part of any skin cleansing regimen, and physical exfoliants like PE beads increase the effectiveness of cleansing products. For beauty and personal care companies searching for alternatives to PE beads, Vantage offers a full range of Desert Whale Jojoba exfoliants that are natural, sustainable and biodegradable. Its PFJ-S Beads have been developed in response to the need for cost-effective natural exfoliants, which provide similar efficacy and skin feel to that of PE beads.

PFJ-S Beads are made with Jojoba esters derived from natural wax esters, which are extracted from seeds of the jojoba plant, a shrub native to the Sonoran Desert, located in the US and Mexico. These beads and other Desert Whale Jojoba natural exfoliants offer a variety of advantages.

The benefits of PFJ-S Beads:

Saving whales and protecting oceans

Over the course of almost 40 years, Vantage has built expertise in the development, production and supply of environmentally friendly cosmetics ingredients through green, sustainable practices. This journey began in the ’70s when founders of the Desert Whale Jojoba Company promoted jojoba oil as a unique plant-derived replacement for highly valued sperm whale oil, playing a key role in the introduction and growth of the jojoba industry, and assisting in the save the whales environmental movement.

‘The Desert Whale brand has a proud heritage in helping to save whales by offering jojoba oil as a replacement for sperm whale oil in the 1970s. Today the brand is expanding on this heritage by assisting in saving our rivers, lakes, oceans and marine life by offering a complete line of natural jojoba exfoliants as replacements for PE beads,’ says Michael Young, director of Desert Whale Jojoba Oil and Derivatives at Vantage. ‘We have come full circle, working to save the very oceans that are inhabited by the whales we helped to save.’

A reliable supplier

Vantage is the largest jojoba grower and producer of jojoba products, offering a wide range of Desert Whale Jojoba oil and derivatives in addition to natural jojoba exfoliants. It is the only vertically integrated supplier owning every step in the supply chain, from farming and oil extraction to derivatives’ manufacturing. This forms part of its ongoing commitment to providing security of supply and reliable service.

In addition to its farm in Arizona, in the US, Vantage recently acquired a majority share in Agrinsa, one of the world’s largest jojoba farms in Argentina. As a result, the company has expanded its growing capabilities and further secured the supply of jojoba from multiple sources in regions with different growing seasons.
