Smart sanitisation for liquid packaging

Thanks to the energy recovery system, users can achieve energy savings of up to 40 per cent in heating and 60 per cent in cooling during the sterilisation processA new patented energy recovery concept for hot water shower sterilisers enables pharmaceutical manufacturing and packaging companies to achieve significant savings during the sterilisation process of liquids in 100 per cent sealed containers.

Packaged products such as filled ampoules, vials, bottles and blow-fill-seal products typically go through a sterilisation process before inspection. 

The system was developed by Schoeller-Bleckmann Medizintechnik (SBM), a Bosch Packaging Technology company. ‘By implementing our new energy recovery equipment, pharmaceutical suppliers can significantly reduce the amount of heating and cooling energy they use,’ explains Isa Alkan, head of sales at SBM. ‘The concept works not only with our hot water shower sterilisers, but also with machines from third party providers.’ 

The new self-contained, independent system consists of a multi-layer storage tank, which is divided into several temperature zones and firmly piped to the steriliser via a heat exchanger. During cooling, the hot process water flows through the exchanger, where it is cooled by cold water from the storage tank. The storage tank water thereby absorbs energy from the steriliser and heats up again. 

As a result of the continuous repetition of these process steps, up to 40 per cent of the initial heating energy can be saved and 60 per cent of cooling energy. ‘Apart from the saving potential, a lower amount of overall media consumption also leads to smaller tank sizes,’ says Alkan. ‘With these reductions, companies can contribute to environmental protection and optimise their “green” image.’
